Who's Called to "Go"?

I have been reading "Radical" by David Platt.
Here an extremely thought provoking quote,

---------------------------------------------

We take Jesus’ command in Matthew 28 to make disciples of all nations, and we say, “That means other people.” But we look at Jesus’ command in Matthew 11:28, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest,” and we say, “Now that means me.” We take Jesus’ promise in Act 1:8 that the Spirit will lead us to the ends of the earth, and we say, “That means some people.” But we take Jesus’ promise in John 10:10 that we will have abundant life, and we say, “That means me.”

In the process we unnecessarily (and unbiblically) drawn a line of distinction, assigning the obligations of Christianity to a few while keeping the privileges of Christianity for us all. In this way, we choose to send off other people to carry out the global purpose of Christianity while the rest of us sit back because we’re “just not called to that.”

----------------------------------------------------

The part that really hit me was, "We assign the obligations of Christianity to a few while keeping the privileges of Christianity for us all."

What are your thoughts? Do you think that is true?

In what way are you making disciples and going into all the world?

  1. I absolutely believe that it is true. However, I think we get it in our minds that to reach the ends of the earth we must become missionaries and go to Africa. I don't believe that to be true for everyone. Some are not equipped and some would do more harm than good. George Muller was called to be a missionary to England and start an orphanage. He was a great man of faith that stepped out daily to show God provides in the middle of a big city.

We can be called to "go out" to our own community and help the poor and needy. We can and must do what furthers the Kingdom, even if that is staying in a difficult position at work to spread the Gospel to businessmen and co-workers, or teaching and training our children to serve Jesus with great faith. We have to be careful not to downplay the importance of living out our faith in peaceful witness to others everyday.
